A layby that I only recently discovered lead to an amazing view ..

I’ve wanted to try a sunrise on top of Beinn a’Chrulaiste for some time and when my brother in law Jonathan visit coincided with a great dump of snow it was a must. We really lucked out with the weather too.      

A few times a year we get a snowfall down to sea level and the landscape turns into a castor sugar draped confectionary

A drive back from climbing along the Kinlochleven low road was timed perfectly (total luck) to catch a fiery sunset over Beinn a’Beithir and an even better Earth’s shadow behind the Pap.

back in the Highlands!! Here’s a view from the German road to Kinlochleven near Caolasnacon (looking toward the Mamores)

On our drive down South we passed Loch Achtriochtan in the dreary pre-dawn light

In conditions that the highland area seems to specialise in, myself and Joe Cornish took a drive around Glencoe and the Kinlochleven roads to find viewpoints to make the most of the rapidly changing conditions.

A round of Loch Leven passes over many small gorges. This one, the closest to Kinlochleven, is one I’ve photographed before with frozen sections. In this warm winter weather, the peaty colours of the rock and dark surroundings make for a delicious, chocolatey palette.

On a trip to the climbing wall in Kinlochleven, I took a wander around the car park and found the Blackwater reservoir outflow to be quite engaging. The black of the shadows and peaty tans of the water worked in this abstract photograph. Another below shows the channel through which the water runs before exiting…

Just a quick trip to the climbing wall at twilight and on the way I stopped at Caolasnacon and the Eilean nam Ban (the little island) viewpoint. It was getting pretty dark so I thought something a little more gritty might be called for so the main image is the electricity pylon that caught fire…

A hard frost this morning but only in some places so I took a walk along the river Coe to find the best bits.

A New Year’s day morning walk up Buachaille Etive Beag to spend an hour watching sunrise on Stob Coire Raineach was a fabulous way to start as we mean to go on.
